In the final mix, i used eq, sidechain compression

Detail aspects of your mixing and critical listening skills that you feel are developing, and those that could be improved on:

I feel that my critical listening skills are developing and things like paying attention to a mix and hearing things like what needs to be louder and quieter  or hearing what certain affects do to a track or a mix is getting easier for me to identify.

Critical listening skills i could still improve on are things like identifying the key of a track by ear or frequency.

Detail any problems that were remedied throughout the mix process:

There were no problems during the mix.

Details of any constructive feedback on your mix you received from either your teacher or peer:

Feedback overall was really just work on the mix more and pay attention to melodic areas and make sure the track sounds right.

DOS210.4 Pre Mix Planning

For this assessment, I have made a original track in the genre of Melbourne Bounce that I am going to mix.

The genre of Melbourne Bounce relies on mix techniques like Side-Chain Compression,EQing of the High and Sub offbeat bass, bandpass and formant filters on the synth leads and also dirty distorted saw waves.

This is some techniques that i haven’t used in the other mixes but have done in my own tracks.

Problems of the Mix

  • As I’m doing it myself, i will need a reference track to hear the mix compared to a commercial mix

OH&S of Home Studio

Im pretty careful when I’m working in my home studio space but in every situation theres always risks!

Potential Risks:

  • Electrocution – Cables managed properly, no daisy chaining power boards
  • Spillage – no liquid allowed near studio equipment
  • Sit properly on studio chair
  • Wear enclosed shoes
  • Loudness

Post Mix Review

So after session 4 and getting the levels right preventing clipping and so fourth, I exported the mix to .WAV 48000hz sample rate and 24bit rate file format.

After listening to the final mixdown, I could tell the mix was well rounded and satisfying, it reminded me of the intro credit audio from the show ‘The 100’ whch was nice to know it had reminded me of a professional mix.

In the final mix, leveling the individual channels to prevent clipping was the main technique we used to complete the mix.

My contributons to the final mix were in my critical listening skills to identify areas of the track that needed to be brought out or turned down.

For the final mix Josh and I met up at my house to do the mix.
We both had our views on the final mix and what needed to be turned up or down, but in the final mix i think we found what was right and what sounded good.

Clipping was a problem in the final mix but after adjusting the levels this problem was resolved.

Critical listening skills i would like to work and improve on would be identifying the key of a track, better understanding of frequencies in the track and comparing audio with and without effects and have a better knowledge of what certain effects do and soundlike.

Collaborative Mix Plan – Bradley Young and Josh Mackie

In a group of two (Josh Mackie and I(Bradley Young)) have decided to do a mix of a electronic cinematic soundtrack called ‘Steampunk Siege’ by Nahum Strickland.

Software we will be using is Ableton Live 9 as we are familiar with this program and have access to it at home.

In ableton all the track will be warped to suit the BPM of the track which is 100.
