CIU 110 Reflective Journal Week 6

So after 6 weeks of starting the bachelor of audio in sydney i have learnt more about recording though a analogue setup and using acoustic instruments in electronic productions then i have previously done in my previous diploma of electronic music production.

it has been good and learning about the analogue systems has opened my mind up to different ways of making music 🙂

In the studio last week, for AUD210 studio class we had to replicate last weeks lecture and record a piano track into protools.

Our challenge was to record the piano in a Mid-side position and decode the ms signal on the mixing desk and send that sound into protools into one stereo track.

After we had a few minutes trying to work it out, with assistance from our lecturer we figured out what we had to patch on the patch-bay and the phasing and panning of the channels and got a nice mid side sound to the recording.

For our assessment my group and i went into the Neve studio and recorded our drum takes for our track.

The session was from 4-8 and once we got there we started to setup the drums and mic them up which took up approximately an hour.

The next two hours were spent recording the drums for our project.

In the last hour we reviewed our recordings and saved everything and exported the samples we needed and saved them to our own usbs and hard-drives.

This was a great experience as it was our own work and we were on our own to record in the studio which was fun and different.

In terms of the essay, i am saying why Hardwell is my inspiration to make music and succeed in the industry.

This video is a Q&A on his studio and includes a track that has inspired me for a while called spaceman!

Tonight we went into the Neve and recorded our drums for our project.

The session was from 4-8 and we all got there on time.

We set up the drum kit, miked it all up and got ready to record within the first hour.

The next two hours were spent recording the drums for our project.

In the last hour we reviewed our recordings and saved everything and exported the samples we needed and saved them to our own usbs and hard-drives.

Next week we have the EMP studio on wednesday and the Neve on Friday where we will be editing and writing the other elements of the track!

CIU110 Reflective Journal Week 5

This week we learned how to mic up a piano in several ways and record the piano into a stereo mix.

Two basic ways to set up microphones placement to record a piano are AB and XY.

XY Mic Placement^

Both give a slightly different sound.

After 5 weeks of uni I finally had my head around the Neve 75 Studio and passed the Signal flow test today!

CIU110.1 Reflective Journal Week 4

Tell us what your essay subject will be, discuss how general or focused you think your subject is:

My essay will be on a DJ/Producer/Label Owner by the name of Hardwell and will focus on why he has inspired me to pursue my career in Music Production and live performance in DJing.
(“Hardwell”, n.d.)

Tell us what your thesis statement for your essay is, or at least show us that you are thinking about what your thesis could be – remember, if you are thinking in terms of questions your thesis statement is an answer to the question:

Hardwell is a DJ and a Music Producer who has proved to the world that you can do anything in your life if you work hard and have a strong passion for it, “If you can dream it, you can do it”.

(Hardwell, 2013)

(Hardwell, 2015)

Tell us the four terms that you are thinking of researching for your glossary assessment:

1. Style

2. Effects

3. Djing/Performance

(Hardwell, 2015)

4. Motivation/Inspiration

Discuss how you are researching the terms:

Using previous knowledge of Audio Production, I have a fair understanding of what each term is and how they relate to the subject of my essay.

Using google to search for more in-depth answers to questions relatable to the subject will help me understand the context of the terms allot better.

This week in AUD210 we learnt more about different ways to mic up instruments and in the studio class we were told to repeat last weeks studio lesson of recording drums and mixing them without the help of Brani.

We all allocated each other different jobs (setting up mics, audio engineering, operating the neve 75, pro tools operator) and had to record a drum session and mix the drum session into protools.

This was a great experience as it was all our own work and had minimal help from Brani which got us feeling confident in which mics we choose, positions of the mics, gain structure of the console and the mixing of the recording.

AUD 210 week 4 blog post

Deciding to go for a Neurofunk DnB track was something that I have never done before but watching Alan do some sound design for the Neurofunk sound was cool and very interesting.

Before this project I was never really into DnB but hearing a few tracks that Alan showed me and going out and finding a few DnB DJs/Producers like Spore really gave me an idea of what Neruofunk DnB is all about and how cool it sounds.

To me, DnB sounds very high tempo and very distorted sound design kinda like Dubstep.

This track by Spore – The Whole Where Your House Was, is such a cool track and is very energetic and great to listen to.

3 main parts

very melodic, soft beat

distorted sounds, distorted uplifters, pitched vocal uplift,

distorted sounds, hard drum breaks, booming bass

AUD 210 blog week 3

Our idea for the group project was to make a track that tried to infuse all our ideas into one, this seemed highly impractical and unreasonable as different styles can’t easily be fused together. After our presentation we decided that we were going to get Alan to write down a simple drum and bass track that we can use as a template where we all will partake in further sound design and track elements. The drum recording for the project is going to be done in the Neve 75 after we have come up with a template track. Andrey has a mate of his who says he will be able to come in and perform the drums for us.
